Photography isn’t just about the subject – it’s about how that subject is lit – Light changes everything. Light has the power to completely transform the way we perceive a scene, and sometimes, the difference of just a few hours can turn an ordinary photo into something extraordinary.
Take a look at the two images I’ve shared above. They were taken at the exact same location – nothing in the scenery has changed. But the lighting? That’s where the magic lies. The photo on the right was shot at midday, during autumn with a lot of nice looking colors. Meanwhile, the image on the left was taken during golden hour – that dreamy time just before sunset, when the light becomes soft, warm, and deeply atmospheric. Suddenly, the same place feels entirely different. More inviting. More alive.
Learning to see and understand light is one of the most powerful skills you can develop as a photographer. Once you begin to notice how light falls, where it comes from, and how it changes throughout the day, your approach to photography will shift forever. You’ll start timing your shots more intentionally. You’ll chase light, not just locations.
That’s why I created a free guide: “Learn to Read Light” (English and German). It’s a simple but powerful PDF that teaches you the fundamentals of natural light and how to use it to enhance your images – no matter what gear you have. Whether you’re a beginner or just looking to refine your eye, this guide will help you see the world differently.

Photography Tip: How to Showcase Your Portfolio Effectively
Curate Your Best Work
Select images that best represent your style and skills. Focus on showcasing a range of subjects to highlight your versatility. Ensure that each photo contributes to the overall narrative you want to convey.
Organize by Themes or Projects Arrange your portfolio into categories or projects to make it easier for viewers to navigate. This could be by genre (landscapes, portraits, etc.), location, or specific themes that resonate with your work. Since I focus on landscape photography, I didn’t do this.
Include Stories
Adding brief stories behind your images can provide context and engage viewers. Share interesting details about the shoot, location, or the inspiration behind each photograph.
