I’m considering upgrading to the new Nikon Z8! Currently, I shoot with the Nikon Z7, which I purchased a few years ago because it’s smaller and lighter compared to my previous Nikon cameras.
I started my journey with the Nikon D300, followed by the D300s, D600, D610, and then the D750. However, I found these models too bulky and heavy for travel. Briefly, I switched to a Sony A7R and waited for the Z7 to hit the market.
The primary reason for my shift to mirrorless cameras has always been weight. So, why upgrade from the Z7 (701g) to the Z8 (910g)? Occasionally, I’m dissatisfied with the RAW results from the Z7, especially in high-contrast situations where the camera / technology reaches its limits. Though this happens infrequently, but when it does, the photos are often irreparable even with Lightroom.
The Nikon Z8 features a newer, more advanced sensor and the EXPEED 7 image processor, which significantly enhance overall image quality, dynamic range, and low-light performance — key reason for my switch. The electronic viewfinder (EVF)
and rear LCD are upgraded for better resolution and brightness, providing a clearer and more detailed view of subjects. Additionally, the Z8 has improved power management, offering longer battery life, which is important for extended shooting sessions, especially during cold weather.
The Dual Card Slots are back! The Z8 offers enhanced storage options with dual card slots, supporting CFexpress Type B and SD cards. While CFexpress cards are expensive, but also very fast. As a landscape photographer, speed isn’t my top priority, so I can use more affordable SD cards.
For videographers, the Z8 supports higher resolution video recording, including 8K video at 30p and 4K video at up to 120p, making it a significant upgrade for video work.
