Using Reflections in Photography

15. September 2024

Reflections can add new dimension to your photography. This week, I’m revisiting a favorite photograph I took in Iceland, where a lake perfectly mirrored the dramatic landscape. Reflections not only enhance the composition but also provide a unique perspective on familiar scenes. Let’s dive into some tips on how to effectively use reflections in your photography.

Photography Tip: Techniques to Utilize Reflections for Stunning Photos

Find the Right Conditions

For the best reflections, look for calm water with minimal ripples. Early mornings or late evenings, when the wind is calm, often provide ideal conditions for mirror-like surfaces.

Symmetry

Reflections can create symmetrical compositions, adding balance and harmony to your photos. Position your camera to capture the symmetry between the reflected and actual subjects.

Break the Rules

Never center the subject – sometimes breaking the rules can lead to stunning results. Forget about the rule of thirds, foreground and background balance, and leading lines. While these tips are useful, take a look at this striking photograph I’ve shared. Its simplicity speaks volumes.

Use a Polarizing Filter

A polarizing filter can help manage reflections and reduce glare, especially when shooting water surfaces. It can also enhance the colors and contrast in your image, making reflections stand out more vividly.

Capture the Right Moment

Reflections can be fleeting. Be ready to capture the perfect moment when the reflection aligns with your composition. Pay attention to changes in light and weather conditions, as they can significantly impact the quality of the reflection.

Post-Processing

And this is where the fun starts. In post-processing, consider enhancing the contrast and clarity of the reflection to make it more striking. Adjusting the levels and sharpening the reflected elements can bring out their details.

Reflections offer a chance to explore the interplay between reality and its mirrored counterpart, adding depth and intrigue to your images. The photograph from Iceland captures the serene beauty and symmetry of nature, showcasing how reflections can elevate a scene into something extremely special.

Do it with me and jump over to my store. There are several eBooks and presets I have been working on over the past few years – no kidding, it took me quite some time to make all this happen! And I am still working on it, there is more to come!
