Waiting for Silence

25. July 2025

I was waiting for silence in New York City, a place that rarely sleeps. Crowds, noise, and movement are part of its DNA. Yet, even in this crazy metropolis, there are moments of stillness – if you’re patient enough to wait for them.

This photo was taken inside the iconic New York Public Library, a place where architecture meets history, and where silence becomes an experience. This grand staircase, often bustling with visitors, tourists, and curious wanderers, presented a unique challenge: how do you capture it empty, in all its majestic solitude?

It took me nearly 40 minutes of standing quietly at the top of the stairs, camera ready, waiting for the waves of people to ebb. Visitors came in waves—guided tours, students, tourists. Each time the staircase seemed to empty, someone new appeared. But patience, in photography as in life, is often rewarded. For a few precious seconds, the space cleared. The heavy marble walls seemed to breathe. The chandelier cast its glow over the bust below. Click. A moment frozen in time while I was waiting for the silence.

Editing the Mood

The look you see here was crafted in Adobe Lightroom. I chose a darker, moodier style to emphasize the timeless grandeur of the marble and the play of light. Shadows were deepened, highlights softened, and the texture of the stone brought forward to make it feel as tactile as it was standing there.

Useful Travel Tips

If you want to visit the New York Public Library (main branch at 476 5th Ave, New York, NY 10018, right next to Bryant Park), here are some tips:

  • Opening Hours: Typically 10 AM – 6 PM (check their website for updates; hours can vary by day).
  • Entrance Fee: Free. Yes, free! This is a public library, but it feels like a museum.
  • Photography: Non-flash photography is allowed. Tripods require a permit.
  • Best Time to Visit: Mornings right after opening or late afternoons near closing time tend to be quieter.
  • What Not to Miss: The Rose Main Reading Room, the grand staircases (like the one in my photo), and the exhibitions often hosted inside.

Sometimes travel photography isn’t about chasing the perfect sunset or scaling remote mountains. Sometimes it’s about standing still in the middle of a city that never stops – and waiting for silence.

  • Do you want to learn photography?

Do it with me and jump over to my store. There are several eBooks and presets I have been working on over the past few years – no kidding, it took me quite some time to make all this happen! And I am still working on it, there is more to come!
