Lost in Translation

4. March 2024

I was lost in translation my times on my journeys to foreign lands. It’s a thrilling adventure, but it comes with its own set of challenges. One of the most intriguing yet daunting aspects is the language barrier. I have written it in my book “Stuck in Different Languages”, where communication hurdles transformed into opportunities for connection and cultural exploration. The primary challenge in language arises when your conversation partner assumes you comprehend every word, when (in reality) you may only understand a single sentence yet manage to convey fluency. This scenario has occurred to me on numerous occasions, particularly when communicating in French and Spanish.

During my travels to Alicante, while ordering a “Una Cerveza Grande” I would consistently be asked, “Pinta?”

After a few instances, I decided to modify my order to “Una Pinta, Por Favor,” and, to my satisfaction, received the desired large beer. I faced a similar situation in Barcelona, where I employed the same strategy. However, this time, the bartender began speaking to me in Spanish. My limited knowledge only extended to “Si,” meaning yes. As it turns out, he was suggesting a “Pina,” which is a pineapple…

While language barriers may pose challenges, they also open doors to unexpected delights and genuine connections. The journey becomes a dance of understanding and misinterpretation, creating a tapestry of experiences that define the essence of travel.

I always kept saying that travel educates! Even if this sometimes means that you are lost in translation!

Travel Tip: Translating App

I’ve incorporated the Google Translate App into my routine for various translation needs. A recent instance that stands out was when I found myself in a restaurant,

using the app’s camera feature to seamlessly translate the menu before me.

Do it with me and jump over to my store. There are several eBooks and presets I have been working on over the past few years – no kidding, it took me quite some time to make all this happen! And I am still working on it, there is more to come!
