I had the opportunity to try out the impressive Nikkor Z 28 – 400mm f/4-8 VR lens recently.
Typically, I’m all about travelling light, especially when it comes to camera gear. My go-to lens for air travel is the versatile 24-70mm Nikkor Z – it’s my trusty companion for capturing a wide range of shots. On occasions where I needed more reach, like photographing the Statue of Liberty, I relied on my older 28-300mm Nikkor F with the appropriate adapter (F to Z). However, my latest experience at Photo Zumstein in Bern introduced me to Nikon’s latest powerhouse lens.
With a zoom range from 28 to 400 mm, the new Nikon lens sets a new milestone in terms of the range of the focal length.
The lens starts at f/4 at 28 mm, and at 200 mm, only an aperture of f/8 is possible. For daytime outdoor photography, this should generally work wonderfully, also because the lens has an image stabilizer that allows for five stops longer exposure times. Furthermore, noise reduction programs – such as Topaz Labs, or Adobe – have significantly improved in recent months, allowing you to increase the ISO value a bit higher.
Additional Information
The autofocus is driven by an STM motor, and the weight is only 725 grams. The dimensions are specified as 84.5 x 141.5 mm, and the filter thread measures 77 mm.
The case of the Nikon 28-400mm f/4-8 VR has seals against dust and splash water, an electronic adjustment ring, and a lock switch for the zoom ring like the 28-300mm Nikkor F.
