Santiago, the largest island in Cape Verde, is a hidden and not very well-known paradise for photographers. Among the locals, the island is known for its stunning natural beauty…
One of the highlights of my travels to Santiago was the beautiful Hotel King Fisher Village in Tarrafal. This small village located in the northern part of the island is famous for its picturesque bay and the golden sandy beaches. As the sun sets over the Atlantic Ocean, the sky turns into a canvas of orange, pink, and purple hues, creating a truly magical experience during sunset. The sound of the waves and the gentle breeze add to the peaceful ambiance, making Tarrafal the perfect spot to unwind and capture some stunning photos. All that rounded up with one of the best mojitos I have ever had at the Kabungo Beach Bar makes this trip unique.
In addition to its natural beauty, Santiago also offers a rich cultural experience. The island’s capital, Praia, is home to several historical sites and museums, including the Independence Square and the Francisco Mendes Museum, which showcase the island’s history and heritage (if you are interested – I’m not a big fan of museums as you know). The island is also famous for its traditional music and dance, such as Funaná and Batuque, which can be enjoyed at local festivals and events or sometimes in the restaurant Quintal da Musica.
Another highlight of Santiago is its food. The island’s cuisine is a blend of African, European, and Brazilian influences, resulting in a unique and delicious flavor. Visitors can enjoy traditional dishes such as Cachupa, a hearty stew made with corn, beans, and fish or meat, or the famous seafood dishes like the grilled fish or seafood stew. Well, let me just go ahead and try it, even though I have no idea if I like fish or not. (sarcasm) For those of you that know me, know that fish is not of my top choices when it comes to food.
However, Santiago is a true treasure for photographers. From the stunning sunsets in Tarrafal to the rich culture and the difference in agglomeration, the island offers many opportunities for capturing beautiful photographs.
General Tip for Santiago:
If you want to go to the restaurant Quintal da Musica, ask at the hotel reception to make reservations for you! It’s always fully booked! It’s a small place with a stage where artist play different kind of music every night.
